In the coming decades ahead, we’ll likely augment our minds and explore not only a different kind of “human experience”, we’ll likely explore the further reaches of sentience and intelligence itself, and it’s a process that I believe is starting now.

My TEDx video below is an attempt to encapsulate my argument for the inevitability of transhumanism in 15 minutes – including some of the forces that might most strongly encourage its adoption. There’s much to be said about how different we’ve become from the society of even 30, never mind 300 years ago. Hunkered over our desks or our iPhones, heads buried in a dozen screens per day, there’s plenty of research to suggest that we’re losing vital skills and capacities that our ancestors might have taken for granted ( Discovery ). On the other hand we very well may be freeing up cognitive “space” for more complex and varied tasks, and adapting to a world where handling a hundred data streams is hardly a choice anymore. In addition, technology might beargued to afford us more freedom to pursue our highest callings (as we see them), and explore new and rich elements of life. We may be putting up with a lot more “beeping” in our rooms and in our pockets, but no longer are we trapped on a provincial farm or in a hot and noisy factory to generate an income for ourselves .

We may be losing some faculty of memory by using a search engine as opposed to a library, but we also have the video, audio, and text information of the world at our very fingertips – making memory potentially less relevant. We probably have weaker shoulder muscles because we don’t harvest our own crops and wash our clothes on stones. Whether technology is influencing the human condition in a positive or negative way is in large part a topic that’s debatable – but where technology seems to be taking us in the future may not be.

The true overlap of technology and psychology isn’t something exogenous – that is, it is not about our external interaction with technology, or “tools” that we pick up and use. The actual overlap happens when technology and psychology literally intersect. When our technology becomes endogenous – or forms an inner part of us – we will have gone beyond an increase in our capacities aided by gadgets, to a literal change in our human condition itself. (which humanity has just begun to explore) represent not just a new transition in how we live and work – but the beginning of a profound transition in life and consciousness itself.

One referenced project pulled together fluid experts, including some who were expert in the numeric modeling related to computational fluid dynamics, in a team with computer scientists. Essentially, it turned out that the computer guys did not know enough to weigh in as much as they would have liked. Thus, their role, to their chagrin, many times was "mere" programmer.

Some knowledge-based engineering projects experienced similarly that there is a trade-off between trying to teach programming to a domain expert versus getting a programmer to understand the intricacies of a domain. That, of course, depends upon the domain. In short, any team member has to decide which side of the coin to spend one's time.

The International Society for Technology in Education has a brochure detailing an "operational definition" of computational thinking. At the same time, the ISTE made an attempt at defining related skills. [11]

A recognized skill is tolerance for ambiguity and being able to handle open-ended problems. For instance, a knowledge-based engineering system can enhance its operational aspect and thereby its stability through more involvement by the FOOTWEAR Laceup shoes Voltan dPk1XyzK

As in, many times, computational results have to be taken at face value due to several factors (hence the duck test 's necessity arises) that even an expert cannot overcome. The end proof may be the final results (reasonable facsimile by simulation or artifact , working design, etc.) that are not guaranteed to be repeatable, may have been costly to attain (time and money), and so forth.

In advanced modeling, with the requisite computational support such as knowledge-based engineering, mappings must be maintained between a real-world object, its abstracted counterparts as defined by the domain and its experts, and the computer models. Mismatches between domain models and their computational mirrors can raise issues that are apropos to this topic. Techniques that allow the flexible modeling required for many hard problems must resolve issues of identity, type, etc. which then lead to methods, such as duck typing. Many domains, with a numerics focus, use limit theory, of various sorts, to overcome the duck test necessity with varying degrees of success. Yet, with that, issues still remain as representational frameworks bear heavily on what we can know.

In arguing for an object-based methodology, Peter Wegner [12] suggested that "positivist scientific philosophies, such as operationalism in physics and behaviorism in psychology" were powerfully applied in the early part of the 20th century. However, computation has changed the landscape. He notes that we need to distinguish four levels of "irreversible physical and computational abstraction" (Platonic abstraction, computational approximation, functional abstraction, and value computation). Then, we must rely on interactive methods, that have behavior as their focus (see duck test).

Participants requested an app with more detailed sample meals for both trigger and nontrigger days, as they feared erroneously consuming trigger foods on a nontrigger day. Focus group participants were also concerned about the assumption that trigger foods result in symptom onset within 4 hours. The majority of survey respondents (80%) did however agree that their symptoms occurred within 4 hours after eating. Participants were also concerned that trigger foods could result in symptoms lasting longer than 24 hours. They were also wary of foods being categorized either too broadly or narrowly (e.g., testing “nuts” vs “almonds”). These concerns suggest additional design opportunities such as experimenting with different symptom onset periods or iteratively categorizing foods.

Seventy percent of participants in our survey selected breakfast as their preferred test meal. Focus group participants shared part of their rationale behind this preference: they thought breakfast would be the most feasible mealtime to eat the same type of food and drink for the duration of the study, unless the trigger food was an unconventional breakfast food (e.g., alcohol). Participant response to our framework’s requirement that independent variables being controllable and actionable therefore influenced test meal preferences. Further exploration should be conducted to determine how this influence might affect the framework’s efficacy.

Focus group participants were concerned about inconsistent symptom ratings over time. The symptom scales allowed “too much room for interpretation.” They expressed the desire to customize symptom scales to be personally meaningful. We explored this issue further in the survey. We first asked the survey participants to generate their own custom scale with labels, then offered them a selection of four scales to choose from: 7-point with labels, 5-point with labels, 5-point with only endpoint labels, and 3-point with labels ( Figure 5 ). Participants developed custom scales ranging from 4 to 10 points. Fifty-seven percent preferred one of our predefined scales over their custom scale whereas 25% preferred their custom scale. Of the 57%, 47% preferred scale 6b.

Although focus group participants felt they could adhere to self-experiments, most preferred shorter 8-day study, even when told that a longer 12-day study would likely result in higher confidence levels. In the survey, 83% said they would be “extremely likely” or “likely” to complete an 8-day study without giving up or missing days, compared to 67% for a 12-day study.

All focus group participants preferred the frequency visualization over the standard and daily visualization designs (refer to Figure 3 ). However, participants also wanted access to the standard or daily visualizations. Participants felt the calendar associated with these could help them recall details of individual measures and events leading up to them. For all visualizations, participants valued seeing individual data points, as each represents a specific measure to which they could relate. Because data corresponded to each individual, and not to a group of other IBS patients, participants felt more trust that summary statistics described their situation. Participants with stronger backgrounds in statistics preferred interpreting the graphs over the summary statistics because the graphs allowed them to better identify and understand the impact of outliers. All participants expressed a desire for an easy way to share and communicate results with their healthcare providers.
